What to Wear for Your Maternity Photo Session

Deciding what to wear for your maternity photo session can be challenging, not least of all because you’re heavily pregnant and your usual go-to may not fit. In my Launceston based photography practice, each of the maternity photo sessions I have done so far have been styled very differently. Our sense of style will of course be as varied as we are! But there are a few things they each did that helped us capture authentic, honest photographs to celebrate their pregnancies.

Keep it simple

Really, these photos are for your soon-to-be-born child to look back on when they are older. I always think it’s best to show them a side of yourself that is true to this moment in time. No need to go overboard with makeup, hair and jewellery (unless that is your usual style).

Just keep everything simplified so that you and your belly can really be centre stage. Your body is creating life! It is conducting miraculous, magical work. No amount of bells and whistles can make it any more amazing than it already is.

Make sure you are comfortable

Pregnancy is hard enough as it is. Try not to make it any harder for yourself by wearing anything that hurts, digs in or makes you all hot and sweaty. Comfort should be your number one priority. This goes for shoes as well. And hey, if it’s appropriate, feel free to even go barefoot!

Add some texture

Chunky knits, lace and other textural fabrics show up wonderfully on film. Perhaps you have a sentimental shawl you could drape over yourself, or a cardigan to combine with underwear to feel a little more covered. See what you have at home that could create some interesting texture against the smoothness and roundness of your belly, and feel free to chat with me about your ideas. Pinterest is always a great place to go for inspiration, too.

If you’re up for it, bare it all!

Can’t decide what to wear for your maternity photo session? Simple solution: nothing at all! A maternity session really is all about your body, your curves and that belly.

I truly think the most beautiful way to capture and celebrate the incredible journey your body is on is to show it in all its power and glory. I did this for my own maternity photos, and I have never regretted it once.

However, if this is not something you’re comfortable doing, I understand. Perhaps you could try a simple bra and underwear, or drape a sheet around you to create a silhouette?

Why Family Portrait Photography is Important

There’s always a reason to put off professional family portrait photography, right? We can’t afford it right now, when I lose weight, after I get my hair done, the kids can’t sit still yet, we’ll wait for a special occasion.
